Region One murder accused remanded

Two murder accused were remanded after being charged during separate appearances in court last week.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the court proceedings were held virtually from the Port Kaituma Police Station before Magistrate Dylon Bess, who was presiding at the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court on dates between May 3 and May 6.

Ruben Calvis was charged with the murder of Jonah Williams, whose lifeless body was discovered on November 6, 2020. Calvis is also charged with the rape committed on a woman. He is on remand for the murder and the matters were adjourned until August 5.

This newspaper had reported that Williams was chopped to death at Cassie Creek, Baramita, North West District (NWD). The Cassie Creek farmer was reportedly found lying in a trail around 3pm on the day his body was discovered and he bore chop wounds to his abdomen and left arm.

Meanwhile, Samuel Allen, who had been wanted for murder, was also brought before the Magistrate and charged with two counts of attempted murder. The virtual complainants are Troy Roberts and Bertland Scotland, a Police Lance Corporal. It is also alleged that he assaulted Travis Edwards, a police officer.

Police had previously said that Allen, who had been wanted for the murder of Earl Peters, stabbed Scotland multiple times and also seriously wounded Roberts. He also allegedly wounded Edwards while at the Arakaka Police Outpost on August 20, 2020. According to the police, ranks who had been acting on information, went to S1A Junction, One Mile, Port Kaituma, North West District, where they confronted the fugitive. The police said that during efforts to apprehend him, he whipped out a knife and wounded Scotland.

He was remanded to prison and the matters were adjourned until August 3.
