Successful year for Rotary Club of Georgetown Central

Dear Editor,

The Rotary Club of George-town Central (RCGC) is preparing to bring the curtains down on another very successful year which ends on June 30, 2021. During this year, the Club realized a number of successful projects and initiatives, which increased its stature as a thriving non-governmental body as it positively impacted the lives of many Guyanese.

Top among the club’s achievements was the formation of an alliance with the George-town Toastmasters Club (GTMC). On March 30, 2021, Rotary Georgetown Central and the Georgetown Toastmasters Club officially made the marriage a reality; the first such union in Guyana. At a simple but symbolic ceremony, President Andrew Boyle of RCGC presented a plaque to President Shemuel Ben Lewi of the GTMC.

Since establishing the alliance, engagements between the two clubs have been steady. These engagements included on-going meetings to streamline relations and to plan mutually beneficial opportunities; inter-club presentations and the participation of Rotarians and Toastmasters in exchange meetings.

Despite restrictions and setbacks from the prevailing pandemic, the Rotary Club of Georgetown Central lived up to the mantra of “Service Above Self” as it also managed to complete a number of community based projects and initiatives during this Rotary year. These included the following:

The “Hampers for the Holidays Project”, where approximately 450 hampers were disseminated during the Christmas Holidays to less fortunate communities and groups across the country. These hampers contained food and grocery items along with face-masks and other tokens from GTT.

The “Healthy Lifestyles Project”, where outdoor fitness equipment was constructed and installed by the RCGC  in the National Park as part  as part of the Club’s Health and Wellness Campaign and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

The “Childhood Obesity Project”, where a group of young children was enlightened about a range of exercise routines they can perform daily to remain healthy. During the session, the group of youngsters was also provided with health snacks and dietary tips.

During the year, RCGC also made a number of donations in cash or kind where it was desperately needed. These included donations to the volcano-affected island of St. Vincent, and to local groups and individuals who really needed support for health and educational purposes.

Yours faithfully,

Lloyd David
