There must be some way to check on the elderly who are living alone

Dear Editor,

In the last week, the bodies of two more elderly people were found after neighbours reported ‘smelling foul odours’ and called the police. This kind of discovery seems to becoming more common. There is something about 2021 Guyana, no doubt for various reasons many persons, elderly persons live alone, and some probably would resist any daily interventions to check up. There must be some way though, to try to check on patterns to know if the elderly who are living alone are not well. Lights still on? Lights off? Windows not open, daily phone call ‘life certificates’. Daily preoccupations can make time fly and it is easy to realise that you have not seen or heard someone in a few days. We can surely though, try to find ways of ensuring that the elderly especially who live alone are connected, and not wait until we notice foul smells coming from their homes.

Sincerely,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
