Miner on murder charge after Apaiqua Landing shooting

The man accused of killing Shane Blake, who was shot in his chest at Apaiqua Landing, Middle Mazaruni River, last Tuesday, was yesterday charged with murder.

Charles Griffith, also known as ‘Harry,’ 28, a miner of Lot 66 Robb Street, Lacy-town, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a city court.

It is alleged that while at Apaiqua Landing, Middle Mazaruni River, Griffith murdered Blake on June 22, 2021.

He was not allowed to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded on the matter.

The matter will be called again on the July 27, 2021 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

Police said Blake, of Hymakabra, Moruca Village, North West District, was asleep in an abandoned building at Apaiqua Landing, when he was awakened at about 5.20 am by his assailant, who was armed with a gun and instructed him to put on his clothes.

Blake armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the assailant on the shoulder. The man retaliated by shooting Blake in the upper left chest area.

Blake was taken by public-spirited citizens to the Isseneru Health Post, where he succumbed to his injury.
