Woman charged with cuffing and kicking policewoman

A woman has been released on bail after she denied assaulting a policewoman, resisting arrest and behaving disorderly at the Stabroek Market Outpost.

Peaches John appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court via the Brickdam Police Station Hub yesterday when she was read the three charges.

It is alleged that on June 19, at Stabroek Police Station Outpost, a public place, she resisted arrest by Shawna Penn-Williams, a peace officer acting in the execution of her duties. This resulted in her being charged with resisting arrest by the officer. It is also alleged that on the same date and at the same location, she behaved disorderly.

The police prosecutor told the court that at about 14:00 hrs, John went to the outpost to make a report of a matter. While at the outpost, she started using a series of obscenities in a loud tone and was warned about her language but she persisted in her behaviour. This led to an officer taking the decision to arrest her and while attempting to do, she was allegedly cuffed in the head and kicked in the abdomen by John.

Following not-guilty pleas to the three charges John was placed on $12,000 bail for each charge and was placed on a good-behaviour bond until the conclusion of the trial. She is expected to return to court on July 8.
