How to ease Abary flooding

Dear Editor,

If only those in authority could do what the Engineers and Consultants documented before the advent of the MMA-ADA. Since 1950/60. In 1961, Stage 1, Mr. R. F. Camacho, B.Sc (Eng.) M.I.C.E (Control of the Abary) In the 1970s because of the high cost of the Project, it was divided into three Stages. The first Stage was the Abary. This controls from the Berbice River to the West Bank of the Abary Canal by an Irrigational Canal to serve both the West Bank of the Abary and the East Bank of the Mahaicony. This Canal which runs north to south from the existing Abary Conservancy to the Road would pass by Burma. This canal is very important because it forms a barricade to stop the Mahaica and Mahaicony Waters to flow into the Abary Basin. Before the advent of the MMA-ADA, water used to flow freely to the Berbice River yearly from the Mahaica, Mahaicony & Abary. Now, this has been stopped because of the Main Irrigation Canal between the Abary and the Berbice River forming a barrier. This is to irrigate the Abary Right Bank and Berbice river Left Bank. So all water now accumulate from the Mahaicony upper reaches and Mahaica would flow freely in the Abary Basin. (Nowhere to go). They all know 40 years ago that the Abary part is unfinished only the 1st Phase of the 1st Stage is finished and is called the Command Area. The 2nd Phase of the 1st Stage of the Abary is to finish the West Bank Canal of the Abary. This would stop all flooding in the Abary. The Engineers went as far as to document that, unless this is done farmers will lose most of their crops and livestock. They also stated that no charges should be levied unless all works are put in place. Complete negligence of the Government who encourage the farmers to take the challenge and develop the land. Farmers in this area who lost their crops should becompensated fully, even if they have to go to court. Farmers do not have any subsidiary budget or contingency funds to dig into. The Abary silting and blocking with weed is a minor part that causes the flooding. Even when it’s clean, flooding does exist with heavy rainfall. Advise – build the Left Bank Abary Main Canal before the next rainy season.

Sincerely,
