CineGuyana awards school film competition winners today

CineGuyana will today acknowledge the winners and participants of last year’s Secondary School Film Competition. Students from President’s College won the two top spots in the competition held as part of the celebration of Guyana’s republic jubilee anniversary.

There were 20 applicants and eight were shortlisted for the competition. The students were required to create short films on mobile phones featuring one of these ten topics: Use of Social Media by Youth; Minibus Culture; Violence in Schools; Bullying; Corporal Punishment; Exams Pressure; Sexting; It takes a Village; Me and the Oil Industry; and Can I be an Entrepreneur?

The short films had to be an original idea or script, three to five minutes long and created by an individual or group of students.

Founder and president of CineGuyana Burchmore Simon noted that the competition was the first of its kind. Today’s presentation was originally scheduled for last year, but was cancelled owing to COVID-19 restrictions,

Cash and trophies will be awarded to those who secured the top three places and all of the participants will be presented with certificates for their efforts. It was noted that only special invitees will be in attendance and in the light of COVID-19 measures, the event is being held in a spacious building that allows for social distancing. All necessary COVID-19 protocols will be in place.

This month also marks ten years for CineGuyana. The organization consists of writers, directors, producers, arrangers, graphic designers and actors who collaborate for the purpose of film making in Guyana.
