Kilcoy/Chesney cyclist dies after struck by car

A 58-year-old Kilcoy/Chesney man died after he was struck down by a car yesterday morning while trying to cross the road on his bicycle.

The deceased has been identified as Seenarace Mackoon of Kilcoy/Chesney, North Corentyne, Berbice.

The car involved in the accident is registered as HB 4053 and at the time of the accident was driven by a 31-year-old man of Edinburgh, East Bank, Berbice.

According to the police, at about 7:45 am Mackoon was proceeding east along the road, in the vicinity of Cropper School Street, when he proceeded to cross the Albion Public Road, Corentyne from north to south and was struck down by a car heading west. The collision saw Mackoon being thrown onto the left side of the front windshield and onto the road resulting in him suffering injuries to his head and body.

The cyclist was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver of the car and transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, Linden Smartt, 35, who was a passenger in the car sustained injuries above his left eye and was taken to the hospital where he was treated and sent away.

Mackoon’s body is presently at Ramoo’s Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy.

A breathalyzer test that was conducted on the driver registered zero. The police have managed to secure and review CCTV footage that captured the accident.

Investigations are ongoing.
