A toddler drowned on Sunday after she fell into a bucket of water at her Potsville, Kwakwani, Berbice River home.

The deceased, who was identified as 18-month-old Orinda August, had been left in the care of two older siblings while her mother attended a funeral.

The incident occurred sometime between 5.30 pm and 6.10 pm.

The police, in a report, stated that the toddler was upstairs with her 15-year-old sister while her seven-year-old brother was downstairs playing. The report said the brother later went upstairs to check on his siblings and observed his older sister asleep. He made further checks for August and found her lying head down in a bucket of water.

She was pulled out by her brother, who then raised an alarm. August was rushed to the Kwakwani Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

No marks of violence were seen on the exposed part of the body.  No foul play suspected, the police added.
