Some security cameras are positioned improperly and do not serve their intended purpose

Dear Editor,

A few years ago, my letters-to-the-editor cited concerns about installation of security cameras and purposes. To date, my personal opinion is that though many are offering their services for camera installation, the concept or purpose of security cameras and proper installation is lacking. Most cameras are installed at a convenient position, where it looks good in appearance and failing its true purpose. In footage seen on social media, 90% of the subjects cannot be identified by their faces due to the position the cameras are in. As I wrote before, if someone cannot be identified by their physical structure, lawmen would have a hard time capturing criminals. Even reputable companies are installing cameras and their only purpose is to inform people that cameras are around.

Editor, whilst crimes are captured on surveillance cameras, the useful footage help capture criminals; others are not for various reasons. In the recent robbery in Kitty, captured on cameras, and even though the criminals wore masks, were the cameras placed in a more strategic position better results could have been yielded. In addition, it’s compulsory now to wear a mask around the place and provide a vaccination card to enter certain places. Business owners should have a camera positioned conveniently to make it compulsory that everyone remove their masks and look at the cameras before entering. It makes no sense for you to operate a business and not taking adequate actions to protect your investments. Why were the cameras not monitored in another room? With that amount of money and valuables in a building, one would have expected better protection available. Fortunately, no one was physically harmed.

Sincerely,
Sahadeo Bates
