Excavation works may be to blame for city blackouts – GPL

The Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) on Friday said power outages that affected Kingston and contiguous areas in Georgetown on Thursday may have been caused by an excavator coming into contact with primary conductors near its Kingston Power Plant.

In a statement, the company explained that at approximately 2.43 pm on Thursday, there was an interruption in the power supply due to entangled high voltage primary conductors near the Kingston plant.

“Our technical team immediately commenced an inspection of the conductors and discovered that an excavator operating in the vicinity may have come into contact with the conductors resulting in the entanglement,” it explained.

It added that remedial works commenced immediately and at approximately 4.30 pm incremental service restoration commenced.

At approximately 5.08 pm, the company’s F3 Distribution Feeder tripped once again. GPL said its teams were able to successfully complete all remedial works and at approximately 5.57 pm all areas were repowered.
