Dear Editor,
For years two things bug me at the supermarket. I buy salted fish…… it looks clean and white but when boiled turns brown and sometimes rancid. But my greatest distress occurs when at the bottom of every packet I find two large pieces of back bone. It is a scam, it is a con… there is no way that these miserable scrappy looking fish can have so much back bone.
About three years ago I realized that bakeries have been foisting raw bread on their customers. Every few months I purchase a loaf of (Product Name) and (Product Name) sandwich slices. I break off the outer crust and knead the center of the slices and “hey presto” I have a large lump of raw dough. It is a scam, it is a con. A little more sugar in the dough and the outer crust browns quickly but the centre remains raw, thus saving millions in energy annually. A certain vendor in Bartica told me that many of his customers complain that after a few days of purchase both breads stink. I have also experienced this. It stinks because the yeast remains in its raw state in the dough. Thousands of Guyanese daily purchase raw bread and gobble it without a peep. But then, we Guyanese never seem to be able to assert our rights. Dear Editor, like me, please experiment and then discard or publish. Thanks.
