An overheated electric fan is the suspected cause of a fire which severely damag-ed the Wales Masjid, West Bank Demerara yesterday.
According to Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Fire Service, Silyne Griffith the service received a call at 8:18 in the morning and deployed three tenders from the La Grange, Leonora and West Ruimveldt fire stations. The first tender arrived on the scene at 8:29 am.
She added that currently the service suspects that a faulty electrical fan was left plugged in.
“[The appliance] overheated igniting nearby combustible material and spread to the entire build-ing. As a result the first and second floor were com-pletely destroyed and the ground floor was severely damaged,” Griffith explained.
