This nation can benefit from Kanhai’s contributions to our national discourse

Dear Editor,

It will be remiss of me not to acknowledge comrade Rohit Kanhai ‘s letter published in the Stabroek News, Thursday, September 30, 2021 edition under the caption, “ In politics the struggle for power always obliterates logic “. His letter was prompt by two letters by me (SN Sep 23.2021- “PPP/C will snuff out any resistance from our communities” and Sep 25.2021- “Our detractors want the WPA to be a political dinosaur”.

Rohit Kanhai is no stranger to Guyanese politics and has been a member of the WPA for decades and served in organs of the party in Guyana and the USA. The party has benefited from his candid views on the party and national issues; and equally importantly, his immense knowledge of philosophy and political theory and its application to global and Guyanese politics. In 2014 Kanhai appeared before the Walter Rodney Commission of Enquiry and presented significant political and technical testimony to the body.  Over the years, he has infrequently engaged in public discussion on political issues but preferred to do so at the party level and in private exchanges with comrades.

When I saw his letter in the Stabroek News, it was a welcome surprise. I hope that Mr. Kanhai will break with his previous tendency of appearing and disappearing from the public space for long intervals. Anyone reading his letter will agree with the contention that the nation can benefit from his contributions to our national discourse. I am looking forward to Kanhai’s continued engagement in public discussions of national importance.

Sincerely,
Tacuma Ogunseye
