Drunk man rescued from burning home in Upper Berbice

An intoxicated Upper Berbice River man was yesterday morning rescued from his burning home.

Police in a brief statement yesterday said the 28-year-old man was on the stairs of his home when he was rescued by neighbours.

According to the police report, the man’s neighbour a 62-year-old Machine Operator smelled something burning and immediately went to his verandah to investigate. When the man looked out he saw smoke emanating from his neighbour’s home and raised an alarm.

The fire quickly spread through the house and consumed the entire building.

Throughout the fire, the victim remained intoxicated and even when he was questioned by police, they were unable to gather any vital information.

The man, as a result was detained by police for questioning as the origin of the fire remains unknown.
