Moruca labourer drowns in Bonasika Creek

An 18-year-old North West District labourer drowned on Sunday after venturing for a swim in Bonasika Creek, Essequibo River.

Police have identified the victim as Swedel Williams of Moruca,  Region One.

According to reports, Williams left his place of work around 3pm with the intention of taking a swim in the creek but never returned.

A co-worker who observed he was missing went to search for him and found him floating in the river with his face down. He then raised an alarm to which residents responded and assisted in retrieving the body.

Police were summoned to the scene and the body was inspected for marks of violence but none was found.

Williams was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital and later transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination.

The teen was employed by a Zeeburg farmer who has a farm in the Creek.
