Boy injured by shotgun in Duck Creek quarrel

A thirteen-year-old has been injured by a pellet from shots fired in his direction after a confrontation between his father and a farmer at Duck Creek, Corentyne River, Berbice.

The teen was shot in his leg. He was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was treated and sent home.

Police yesterday said that the suspect is a caretaker of a cattle farm owned by Moolpersaud Maniram which is located next to the farm of the victim’s father, Ram Nirmal.

Investigations have revealed that Nirmal’s cows had damaged the barbed wired fence surrounding Maniram’s property and had entered it.

At about 7am yesterday, Ram Nirmal, his son, and two of his workers went onto Maniram’s property to look for his cows, when they were confronted by the suspect with a shotgun.

As a result, an argument ensued between Nirmal and the suspect, after which Nirmal told his 13-year-old son to use his cellphone and video the suspect with the gun.

Police said the suspect, who is yet to be apprehended, discharged six rounds from the gun in the direction of Nirmal and the 13-year-old and a pellet hit the 13-year -old in his right leg.

The suspect subsequently escaped into the nearby bushes and has evaded the attempts to locate him.

An accomplice of the suspect is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
