Man, son attacked on Diwali night after firecrackers row

An Anna Catherina man and his son were severely beaten on Thursday night after a row with two men who were throwing firecrackers in front of their gap.

As a result of the attack, the Guyana Police Force said Michael Anthony, known as ‘Rakash,’ 46, had to get medical treatment, while son, 16, was admitted at the West Demerara Regional Hospital for surgery.

In a press release, the police said Anthony was at the front of his yard when he noticed the two men throwing fire crackers in front of his gap. It was reported that he approached them and told them to desist, which eventually led to an exchange of words and a physical altercation.

According to the police, the two suspects left but returned armed with a cutlass and a metal pipe and dealt Anthony several lashes and chops about his body. The man’s son rushed to his assistance but he was also attacked.

The two assailants fled from the scene after their attack, while the victims were rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital. Anthony was treated and discharged, while his son was transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. His condition was reported to be serious.

The suspects were later arrested, the police noted.
