Livestock authority issues warning over swine fever

The Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) yesterday issued a public advisory over the highly contagious African Swine Fever (ASF) which was recently detected in the Dominican Republic.

In a notice in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek, the GLDA said that the ASF poses no risk to human health but can have a devastating impact on the livestock sector.

The GLDA urged members of the public not to visit pig farms while in ASF affected countries. It urged persons returning from overseas not to bring pork or pork products.

It added: “If you are arriving from an ASF infected country, kindly report same to the customs and quarantine officers on arrival and do not go near to pig farms for seven days”.

For further information members of the public can call the GLDA on 220 6556 or 220 6557.
