CANU rank, soldier get bail on separate charges

Two members of the Joint Services yesterday found themselves in court facing charges that they broke the law.

Xavier Scott, 25, a Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) rank and car wash owner of Lot 5 Camaro Road, Tucville, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Scott pleaded not guilty to a charge that on October 10, 2021, at Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged a Honda vehicle, valued at $275,000. Scott asked for reasonable bail and said that he did not know the virtual complainant.  Scott was released on $75,000 and is expected to return to court on January 21.

Anthony Sam, 38, a serving member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), also appeared before the Chief Magistrate, who read a careless driving charge to him. Sam denied that on September 10, 2021, at Independence Boulevard, Georgetown, he drove a motor vehicle without care and attention.

Sam was released on $20,000 bail and told to return to court on January 7.
