Andrew Phillips was on Tuesday ordered to pay $40,000 after being fined for being in possession of over 150 grammes of cannabis.
Phillips pleaded guilty after admitting that on November 22 at the Rosignol Public Road, West Bank Berbice, he was in possession of 156 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The matter was called before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court.
According to the police, ranks were on patrol duty in the vicinity of the Phagoo General Store where Phillips, who is reportedly known to the police, was seen acting in a suspicious manner. The ranks conducted a search and found a black plastic bag tied to Phillip’s waist, and following further examination of the said bag, another bag, containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, was found.
Phillips was taken to the police station where the suspected narcotic was weighed and that amounted to 156 grammes. During the hearing, Magistrate Hugh ordered that Phillips pay the fine as he (Phillips) indicated that he was not desirous of wasting the Court’s time.
