Part of the Gov’t’s Local Content Policy may be in contravention of the Treaty of Chaguaramas

Dear Editor,

President Ali complained to the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) on Tuesday that Guyana was being blocked out of Caricom markets for food by “nonsensical” barriers. Is he aware that as part of proposed Local Content Policy, his Vice President plans to carve out whole sectors of the Guyana economy exclusively for Guyanese companies, and require joint ventures for other areas, in contravention of the Treaty of Chaguaramas? It is highly likely that at some point the CCJ will be asked to adjudicate.

Sincerely,

A. Persaud
