Powerlifting team unable to participate in South American championships

Due to the weight of expenses of the FESUPO Classic Power-lifting Championship, Guyana’s contingent is unable to participate at the 25th edition of the event which got underway recently in Ecuador.

According to a release, the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation’s (GAPLF) inability to mobilise the resources needed to cover the cost of the team’s participation has resulted in the team remaining in the 592.

“The GAPLF wishes to express its appreciation to those sponsors who reposed confidence in Team Guyana and committed their material support. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet the threshold to ensure minimum in travel and accommodation.”

The release also stated that the GAPLF wishes to assure its sponsors, supporters and the public that Team Guyana was prudently selected, well prepared, ready and eager to proudly represent the Golden Arrowhead as they have in the past. Further, each team member was positioned to medal in their respective categories. With the federation’s non-participation, it means that Guyana will be unable to defend the medals it won in various categories in 2019. However, in spite of this setback, the GAPLF says will continue its work to afford its athletes merited regional and international competitive exposure.

The federation says it is now focussed on the National Seniors Championship scheduled for next Sunday at a venue to be announced, where all indicators point to a very competitive championship.
