A man who allegedly instructed a child to steal a cellphone was on Wednesday charged with theft after the child told police what occurred.
Dwayne Barker, 24, a carpenter of Lot 171 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was arraigned at the George-town Magistrates’ Courts, where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to him.
He denied that on December 10, at Laing Avenue, he stole a cellphone, valued $67,000, and which was the property of Ryan McCovey.
According to the Police Prosecutor, the two men, who are known to each other, were at a shop and it is alleged that Barker told a 12-year-old boy to pick up the phone. The prosecutor said that the child then gave the phone to Barker.
However, someone who saw what the child did told McCovey, who then made a report to the police. The police contacted the child, who told the police that Barker had the phone. The prosecutor said that Barker was then arrested and told of the allegation. The phone was not recovered.
The prosecutor did not object to bail being granted. Barker was released on $20,000 bail. The matter was transferred to Court 6 for a hearing on January 10.
