Two persons died today after a multiple-vehicle smash-up at Mahaica, Region Four involving a police vehicle.

The dead persons have been identified as Christopher Bhagwandat of Mon Repos and Sheereda Persaud, 16, of Bath, WCB.

Four policemen and other persons were injured in the accident.

At the scene, police commander Khali Pareshram explained that preliminary investigations revealed that police ranks from Region 5 were carrying out a traffic operation somewhere around the Perseverance Public Road during which they stopped motor car PNN 8852, driven by Bhagwandat.

“According to the rank, after they pulled the car over the driver indeed pulled to the near side of the road but subsequently drove off,” Pareshram said.

As such, a police patrol that was in the area was informed and ranks pursued the car.

As the police pickup and PNN 8852 were crossing the Mahaica Bridge, the car allegedly braced the police vehicle into the rail resulting in the accident.

As a result, Pareshram explained that both vehicles collided with a canter truck that was proceeding on the opposite side of the bridge.

A motor car that was behind the car also sustained damage as a result of the accident.
