Hodge to lead Windward Islands for opening two regional matches

Windwards team to play Guyana and the Leewards Islands in Trinidad in the upcoming regional four-day competition.

The captain is Kavem Hodge and the vice-captain Kerron Cottoy. The team also includes veteran opener Devon Smith.

The other players are Kimani Melius, Alick Athanaze, Ryan John, Larry Edwards, Ken December, Teddy Bishop, Preston Mc Sween, Daryl Cyrus, Josh Thomas, Akeem Auguste.

The coach is Shirley Clarke, father of West Indies player Kyle Mayers. John Eugene is the deputy coach and Liam Sebastien is the manager.

Meanwhile, veteran cricket commentator Guyanese Joseph `Reds’ Perreira yesterday weighed in on the Guyana team selected for the first two rounds.

“Well I was very happy to see the name (Shimron) Hetmyer appear on the press release and I really hope that this will lead him back to test cricket.

“Playing for the West Indies is more important than any franchise performance. Nobody remembers franchise runs. People remember the runs of Rohan Kanhai, Clive Lloyd, Alvin Kallicharran, Roy Fredericks, Carl Hooper, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Basil Butcher and Ronnie Sarwan, etc,.

“It’s important that he gets back into test cricket, so that he can be remembered in that way. He has lost a couple of years but here’s hoping that he is young enough to recover,” said Perreira

“Of the Guyana squad itself, well, I wanna wish them the very best of luck. They have two matches away. The conditions should be similar to Providence, slower and maybe lower and maybe spinny.

Perreira also spoke of the fact that the team has two wicketkeepers.

“I was a little surprised to see two `keepers in the squad.

“And if Imlach (Tevin) was the one showing well in the trials, although I didn’t see the trials, I don’t see the need for (Anthony) Bramble at this point.

There are other matches and Imlach will have to be judged on his `keeping but he also bats quite well.

“I saw him in the 50 overs in Antigua.

He suggested that Bramble could have been replaced by Kevlon Anderson, the former West Indies U19 player.

“He has the potential of going a lot further as a former West Indies U 19 player,” he reasoned.

Perreira also spoke of the bowling attack.

“Nice attack, good pace, it’s got spin and a nice leader in Johnson (Leon).

According to Perreira, it was good to see Keemo Paul being given the vice-captaincy role.

“He himself needs good performances if he is going to catch the eyes of the selectors.

Perreira said that the team needs a good start.

“A good start is important in regaining the regional four-day title,” he ended.
