Guyana’s female football team The Lady Jags will engage Dominica in the first round of the Concacaf ‘W’ Championship Qualifiers, which also serves as Qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA World Cup this evening at the Leonora Track Field stadium.

Playing at this level is quite an achievement for female football at the international level for this nation.

The Lady Jags have been carrying  the Golden Arrow Head with distinction over the years with their most memorable victory occurring against Guatemala in an Olympic qualifier.

It should be noted that their male counterparts never defeated Guatemala in four tries.

We, as a nation, are extremely proud of our female ambassadors and is 100 percent behind the hard working Guyana Football Federation and their continued investment in the female regional and international programmes.

Today Stabroek Sports’ Charwayne Walker takes a walk dowm memoray lane  looking at the ladies that set the stage for these dynamic Lady Jags of 2022.

Some 40 years ago, former Suriname International and Caribbean player Edwin Schaal, along with Dennis Alexander and Sarjo France, organized an International female two-match series between Suriname’s Top club Oema – SOSO and A Guyana National Female selection.

The year was 1982 and the venue was the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.

The girls from Suriname won the opening match 5-0 and our girls lost the series decider 0-3.

Goalscorers for the Dutch ladies in the second match were H. Kortram 5th minute, T. Wors – Sodimedjo in the 19th minute and U. Clydesdale in in the 52th minute.
