Three more qualify for CARIFTA Games following second trials..

Sprinter, Shamar Horatio, along with Javon Roberts (800m) and triple jumper Trevon Hamer surpassed the qualifying standards in their respective events during the second CARIFTA Trials over the weekend at the National Track and Field Centre.

The trio joined a quintet of other qualifiers for the CARIFTA Games which will be held in Jamaica during the Easter weekend, bringing the number of qualifiers so far to eight following two of three trials at the Leonora facility.

Horatio, 19,  qualified for the blue riband Boys 17-19 100m and 200m events.

The fastest teen during the weekend set the track ablaze with wins in the marquee sprint races in 10.54s and 21.41s respectively to dip under the qualifying  standards of 10.55s and 21.50s.

Hamer, hopped skipped and jumped his way to 14.91m, a shade above the qualifying standard of 14.90m to punch his ticket to disturb the sand in the Boys 17-19 triple jump in the ‘Land of Wood and Water’.

Roberts was also a close qualifier, finishing the two-lap Boys 13-16 event in 1:59.43s, just below the 2:00m standard.

Meanwhile, Wesley Tyndall, Anisha Gibbons, Keliza Smith, Attoya Harvey and Adriel Austin, are the  five other qualifiers so far.

Harvey, followed up her 1500m qualifying run two weeks ago by also qualifying for the 800m.  Racing against the clock, Harvey clocked 2:18.06 to go lower than the 2:19.0s standard. During the weekend, Smith also improved in the Girls 17-19 100m event. After qualifying right on the button (11.80s) two weeks ago, Smith ran 11.68s on Saturday. 

The final trials will be held on March 6 to select the national team to represent the 592 at the 49th edition of the Games. Guyana is set to host the Golden Anniversary  of the prestigious Games next year.
