Man wanted over murder of daughter’s boyfriend held at Ogle airport

The man who allegedly murdered his daughter’s boyfriend on Saturday was apprehended at the Eugene F. Correia Inter-national Airport, Ogle just hours after the police blacklisted him.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to this newspaper yesterday that 44-year-old Sherwayne Brandt, a construction worker of Lot 15 Norton Street, Wortmanville, George-town was arrested on Saturday at around 3pm. Blanhum said that after the police blacklisted the man, he was arrested on arrival at the airport. It is believed that the man was on his way to the USA via Trinidad.

At around noon on Saturday, the Guyana Police Force issued a release stating that the man was wanted in relation to the killing of Leon Gittens, 25, of Lot 118 Cowan Street, Kingston.  Although it was not immediately clear what provoked the fatal shooting of Gittens, the police said that the suspect had threatened him last month.

The shooting occurred around midnight on Friday at Lot 211 Freeman Street, East La Penitence. The police said that the suspect went to the address, where he was supposed to be picking up his daughter. The woman told the police that when he arrived, she noticed that he was clad in a blue dress and wearing a wig. He was also brandishing a black handgun when he entered the yard. She said that she ran for cover after seeing the weapon. She then heard three loud explosions, which sounded like gunshots, before the man fled.

The police said that the woman made checks after the suspect escaped and she saw Gittens lying motionless in front of a bedroom. She raised an alarm and the man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
