Partially decomposed body of Venezuelan man found in Demerara River

The partially decomposed body of a 19-year-old Venezuelan national was found floating in the Demerara River on Thursday afternoon and it is suspected that he might have drowned.

The dead man has been identified as Eliadis Martinez, a resident of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Police yesterday said that the discovery was made around 16.00hrs in the vicinity of Brickery/Garden of Eden, EBD. His body was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was officially pronounced dead.

According to a police report, preliminary enquires revealed that Martinez went to a birthday celebration a short distance from his home on Thursday night.

Several hours later, the police noted, Martinez left the birthday celebration intoxicated and he never returned home.

As a result, relatives and friends made several checks for him but failed to locate him.

Following the discovery of his body, Martinez was positively identified by his father.

His body was examined and there were no visible marks of violence. However, the police said that Martinez’ lips appeared to have been eaten by fishes or other sea creatures.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted sometime in the new week.
