A taxi driver who was charged with stealing a City Magistrate’s cell phone has been sentenced to 24 months behind bars.

Omawalie Caesar, 39, called ‘Wallie’, a taxi driver of Lot 1235 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was arraigned before Magistrate Dylan Bess who presided over the trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He previously denied that on November 23, at Battery Road, Kingston, Georgetown, he stole a Samsung Note 9, valued at $200,000, property of Senior Magistrate Leron Daly. However on February 21, he was found guilty of the charge and sentenced by Magistrate Bess to 24 months in jail.

According to the facts presented to the court by the police prosecutor, on the date mentioned at about 17:15 hrs the virtual complainant secured her car which the phone was left in. Upon returning she observed that the phone was missing. She then made a report to the police and following investigations, CCTV footage was retrieved. The footage showed Caesar removing the phone from the vehicle.

The Court also heard that Caesar has another matter that is currently before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. The prosecutor noted that Caesar is a repeat offender and that some time back the man was sentenced to three years in jail for a previous matter. He therefore objected to bail based on the fact that the man is a repeat offender and the evidence that the police obtained.
