At no time did Uitvlugt management consider dumping these canes

Dear Editor,

The Executive Management of the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) cannot and will not be drawn into idle and unsubstantiated chatter with anyone.  The Corpora-tion must aspire to stating the facts on every occasion. We have no other choice, recognizing that we have the livelihood of some 7,747 families in our care. Therefore, we must debunk and reject the grossly inaccurate public statements made by one Mervyn Williams on his social media page.  We are also advised that this person is a former Member of Parliament, and thus, we expected nothing from him but the most honourable of behaviour; not statements that are patently false. On March 5th, 2022, Mr. Williams allegedly made a patently false claim that “Uitvlugt Sugar Estate is dumping three hundred punts of sugar cane”.

The facts will reveal this is furthest from the truth. It would be remiss of GuySuCo to let this misreporting or misinformation to go unremarked upon. GuySuCo hereby states the facts for the public:

1.            There was a mechanical failure of the #1 Mill turbine gearbox in the Uitvlugt factory and this has resulted in the Factory coming to halt on Saturday March 5th, 2022.

2.            Immediately the technical team kicked into action and commenced the required repairs at a fabrication workshop.  The promised delivery date from the workshop is March 8th, 2022.

3.            If this plan is fulfilled, grinding operations will recommence on the evening of March 9th, 2022 where some 600 punts of cane are scheduled to be crushed.

4.            The experts within the Corporation are testing the cane every day to determine the purity level which will help to make production decisions.  However, at no time did the Executive Manager consider dumping any of these canes and thus we are shocked that a non-expert at sugar production can arrive at such a conclusion.

GuySuCo is calling on Mr. Williams to withdraw these erroneous statements on the Uitvlugt Sugar Estate.  The public is encouraged to visit our Head Office at LBI Estate to share their concerns and seek clarifications on any matter pertaining to the advancement of the Industry. Nonetheless, GuySuCo welcomes the discourse so we can do what is best for the 7,747 workers and Guyana.

Sincerely,

Angela Abraham-Parks
