This gov’t seems resolute on projects at the detriment of our environment

Dear Editor,

Last month we celebrated Black History Month; on the 23rd we celebrated the 52nd anniversary of our Republic and on Sunday, March 7, we celebrated Ghana Day, the Anniversary of the independence of the first African Country to severe linkage from a European Master. In his address on Republic Day, ignoring a truism that history repeats itself, President Ali over simplistically announced the billions in gold reserves, available to the same group who indulge in plunder and unrestricted exploitation of our natural God-given resources while at the same time, destroying our rivers, lakes, in some cases changing the course of our waterways. Destroying our fish and marine resources, chasing our birds and animals with unimaginable savagery and a “don’t care attitude.”

The President should know that his and our descendants will not forgive him when they see areas that were once inhabited by rare and priceless species now desolate, ugly and unwelcome to both man and beast. How can a Government be so petty to not even invite the designated Opposition Members to routine National exercise, such as Flag Raising? The non-involvement in the extraction of our oil without a modicum of consultation, smacks off an unhealthy combination of arrogance and folly. President Ali, as I quipped on Sunday, seems determined to pursue a path of folly, aided by a small group of sycophants, who seem only to be interested in getting as much dollars in their own pockets. Dr. Jagan must be weeping as he looks down on a Party he built on the pillars of justice, workers’ rights and the use of our resources for the benefit of our people which are now in the fore-front of satisfying the thirst and greed of imperialist and super capitalism and clearly set for the re-colonisation for our beloved country.

Equally sad, is Forbes Burnham, a passionate supporter of the Non-Aligned Movement established in 1961, in Yugo-slavia by the four Greats, Josip Broz Tito, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Jawaharlal Nehru and Kwame Nkrumah, intended to relieve countries like ours, from the iron grip and greed of the big States and big Businesses. I say to all of our Leaders, and I ask that they ponder the full meaning of the following written by Patrick Henry, Orator and American Revolutionist as they stood against the British heavy-handed exploitation of America’s human and natural resources. Patrick Henry at one of his Conferences in 1775 noted “Let us trust God, and our better judgment to set us right hereafter. United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.” Are our leaders listening? I am copying this letter to all of them.

Sincerely,

Hamilton Green
