Businessman held after police search uncovers ganja, almost $20M in cash, smuggled liquor

Police on Wednesday arrested a city businessman, who was found with over five pounds of cannabis, a large quantity of smuggled liquor and almost $20 million in local and foreign currencies.

The Guyana Police Force said the items were found after ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) executed a search warrant on the home of the 30-year-old businessman at East Street, Georgetown. Both he and members of his family were arrested as a result of the discoveries.

In a statement, the police said a search conducted in the bedroom of the property led to the discovery of GYD$2,508,370.00, USD $75,697.00, SRD $4,664.00, EURO6,145.00, BAJAN $19.00, CAD $40.00, T&T $171.00,  Bolivar $100.00 and BZD $100.00.

In addition, a further search was conducted of a locked room the bottom flat of the property that was opened by the businessman. There, the police said investigators found a quantity of uncustomed liquor. It comprised 24 bottles of Double Black, 16 bottles of Johnny Walker Black,  11 bottles of Jack Daniels Whisky, 2 bottles of Merry Irish Cream Liquor, and 16 cases of Budweiser Beer (24 bottles each).

They also found a case of Red Bull Energy Drink (24 tins) and 47 boxes disposal latex gloves (100 each).

The police added that a small blue and white cooler with the businessman’s logo was seen on top of a cupboard. In it, ranks found a black plastic bag containing two parcels wrapped with transparent plastic, later confirmed to be 2.3 kilos of suspected cannabis.

The police said the businessman was told of the offence committed, arrested and cautioned. His wife, mother-in-law and wife’s 18-year-old cousin, along with the above mentioned items and cash found were escorted to CID Headquarters.

The police added that on the same day ranks also executed a second search warrant at Providence, East Bank Demerara property owned by the businessman and they confiscated three DVRs.
