Police await legal advice on charges after East St currency, drugs bust

The East Street, Georgetown businessman who was arrested along with three members of his family last week following the discovery of millions of dollars in local and foreign currencies, uncustomed liquor and narcotics at his premises remains in police custody.

This was confirmed by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who told Sunday Stabroek that the police are awaiting on legal advice on the way forward in the matter.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) had said that ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters carried out the search between 14.30 hrs and 15.30 hrs last Wednesday.

The police said a search conducted in the bedroom of the businessman’s East Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown home found $2.5 million Guyana currency, US$75,697, SR$4,664, €6,145, BB$19, CA$40, TT$171, 100VE Bolivars, and BZ$100. The total amounts to over $19.5 million.

Additionally, the police said a further search was conducted in a locked room of the bottom flat, which was opened by the businessman. In the room, investigators found 24 bottles of Double Black, 16 bottles of Johnny Walker Black, 11 bottles of Jack Daniels Whiskey, 2 bottles of Merry Irish Cream Liqueur, and 16 cases of Budweiser Beer (24 bottles each). 

Additionally, a case of 24 cans of Red Bull Energy Drink and 47 boxes of disposable latex gloves (100 each) were also found.

The police added that a small cooler with the businessman’s logo was seen on top of a cupboard. “Same was retrieved and searched in the businessman’s presence and the police ranks found a black plastic bag containing two parcels wrapped with transparent plastic,” the statement had said, before noting that the substance was later confirmed to be 2.3 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis.

The businessman, his wife, mother-in-law and a teenage cousin of his wife were subsequently escorted to CID Headquarters.

Later the same day, the police added that another search was carried out at another property belonging to the businessman at Providence, East Bank Demerara, during which three DVRs were confiscated from the property.
