I must commend the Ali Administration for their level of diligence as it relates to infrastructure. However, Zeeburg Secondary School appears to be neglected. Currently, there is an all-weather road finished with brick. This is hazardous to students and other pedestrians using the road. When vehicles are driving, these bricks can become missiles being squeezed out from under tires at high speeds. Further-more, the road is narrow. This forces pedestrians to walk in the mud when vehicles are entering or leaving the compound. Additionally, there is no parking lot for teachers to park their vehicles. Hence, in the rainy season, teachers have no option other than to park in the soft, wet mud and step in the mud as they leave their vehicles. Editor, all-weather roads and muddy conditions are associated with farming, not a teaching and learning environment.
Zeeburg Secondary School is a grade A school, accommodating approximately 1000 students, and producing some of the best students in Region Three at the CSEC exams. It is a dishonour that the hard working staff and students at the school have to endure these poor conditions. Additionally, there is no guard hut at the gate for there to be proper monitoring of persons entering or leaving the compound. When it is raining, the guard has to run and seek shelter over 100 feet away. On the other hand one cannot expect the guard to sit in the sun all day or wait in the pouring rain to monitor the ingress and egress of visitors and students. Consequently, anyone could enter and leave the compound at their own will, without being approached by the guard in a timely manner. This places the safety of approximately 1000 students and their teachers in jeopardy.
My first recommendation is that the road from the school gate be finished with asphalt. Secondly, there should also be a separate walkway for students entering and leaving the compound. Thirdly, a concrete parking lot be provided for teachers to park their vehicles. With such a gigantic budget this year I’m sure the Government of Guyana can afford to allocate a minute fraction of it to fix the environment at Zeeburg Secondary.
