Opposition lodges Parliament motion calling for quarterly payment of $200,000 to adults

The APNU+AFC has lodged  a motion in the National Assembly calling on the government to promptly devise a strategy to address the high cost of living currently burdening Guyanese.

The motion was tabled by Member of Parliament Annette Ferguson and is scheduled to come up for debate at the next sitting of the House.

The resolve clause says: “AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Government of Guyana, make provisions for EACH Guyanese above the age of eighteen (18) years be paid a quarterly cash grant of two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000.00), which will compensate for the increase in the cost of living”.

The recital to the motion stated that Guyana continues to experience tremendous health and socio-economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic ranging from over 1000 deaths to the skyrocketing cost of living. It contended that the government has only provided a one-off $25,000 cash grant as a means to cushion the effects of COVID-19 while food prices continue to rise exponentially.

“…the Government of Guyana provided a 7%, taxable, increase in salary to Public Servants for December 2021. AND WHEREAS, inflation persist, and Guyanese must brace themselves for further increases in the cost of living in 2022,” the motion further stated.

It added that the government has failed to devise strategies or implement policies that have proven effective at combating inflation or cushioning its impact on the lives of Guyanese.
