I recently read with keen interest a letter circulating in the social media signed by Attorney – at – Law, Eusi Anderson, and addressed to another Attorney – at – Law, Navin Singh. According to the missive Navin Singh is alleged to have unleashed an unprovoked verbal tirade of racially charged insults on a woman Special Constable (SC). She was attached to the residence of Narvan Singh. The media is awash with condemnations by diverse groups and individuals of the alleged misconduct of the Attorney – at Law in question. However, there is the usual massive wall of silence from the Guyana Police Force and its internal organs.
There is not a single word on the issue coming from the very inactive Police Offi-cers’ Association led by Senior Super-intendent Calvin Brutus. The installed Corporate Communications Unit run by Mark Ramotar and Stan Gouveia is extremely silent on this issue. The ‘illegal’ Police Association which is chaired by the infamous Inspector, Prem Narine, and mandated to represent the welfare of non-gazetted ranks like the SC, is yet to make a statement on the issue. The Head of the Special Constabulary, Superintendent Owen Trotz, appears to be pusillanimous. It is suspected that if he speaks out, his continuing employment in the GPF may be in jeopardy. The Police Women Asso-ciation that was formed to look at women’s issues and concerns in the GPF appears to be dormant since its Chairper-son, Deputy Commissioner Maxine Graham, demitted office some time ago. Hence, no statement was issued from that Association. The Association should wake up and play a meaningful role in this and other women’s issues.
One would have expected that a matter of this magnitude would have influenced the Top Cop to order a swift, certain and appropriate investigation to find out what actually transpired, taking into consideration the God given doctrine of “Right to be Heard”, and inform the public about the state of the investigation. I hold no brief for the SC. I do not know her, but I have an abiding interest in law enforcement. Thanks to the media, I am allowed to comment publicly on law enforcement matters. This allegation cries out for urgent justice. I hope that it is not dashed under the “Police No Action Red Carpet” like other damnable allegations. May God help and bless the Guyana Police Force.
