Road linking UG entrance to Sophia not open despite being completed

Dear Editor,

The main road linking the UG entrance to Sophia was completed about two to three weeks ago. Despite this completion it remains closed to the public, even though it is five months behind the scheduled completion date of September 2021 (DPI article of 28th January, 2022).

We have all been waiting expectantly for this road to open to ease the hassles we have been facing for the past few years to cross over the narrow bridge at the head of First Field, Cummings Lodge  that only facilitates one-way traffic. This bridge has been the site of frequent traffic build up, especially at peak hours, which has resulted in many confrontations by hassled road users.

It is therefore incomprehensible that, despite completion, the new road remains closed to traffic. Is the contractor fully aware of the additional stress he has caused to the public by the slothful completion of his contract? It is not only the subject minister that is dissatisfied!

Here’s hoping that this letter meets the eye of someone in authority who instructs the contractor to remove the objects blocking the road so that citizens can receive much needed respite.

Special thanks to the Government for rebuilding this road. It has created a vital link between the East Coast Demerara and Central Georgetown.

May I, in closing, offer one further suggestion? The section of the road directly in front of UG entrance is another traffic bottleneck when UG is in session. Could the road directly in front of this entrance be widened so as to allow for traffic to easily pass there to access this new road?

Yours faithfully,

M. Abraham
