West Ruimveldt food vendor dies following crash with minibus

Popular city street-food vendor, Debra Salikram, died yesterday morning following an accident on La Penitence Public Road, Georgetown.

Fifty-nine-year-old Salikram known as ‘Aunty Sookie’, of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was struck off her motor scooter following a collision with a minibus, BAB 1155, which police said was speeding. The accident occurred at around 6 am in the vicinity of Middle Road, La Penitence.

The police reported that the minibus was travelling south along the eastern side of the public road whilst Salikram was travelling in the opposite direction. She reportedly turned east into the path of the minibus, driven by Denzel Abrams. This resulted in a collision causing Salikram to fall onto the roadway.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene but she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police report that no trace of alcohol was found on the driver’s breath and he was arrested and placed in custody.
