The family of 52-year-old fisherman Terrence Gomes, who is now missing and presumed dead, was up to Friday still awaiting word on signs of his body.

Gomes is suspected to have drowned after an accident on Wednesday evening at sea in Suriname. Gomes along with five other crew members left Guyana to fish in Suriname last Saturday.

Gaitree Singh said she remained clueless after receiving the news on Wednesday that her husband was involved in an accident and that his body was missing.

“We get a call and that sends us in a shock. Everyone was saved except him… we can’t believe what is happening, my husband was a good man and we are missing him dearly,” Singh related.

“Me and him together for 13 years. We have three children together. He did not want to go to sea but he has a family to maintain,” she added.

Following the accident, a report was made to the coast guards in Guyana and Suriname by relatives. Gomes was working with a businessman, identified only as “Vishal,” from the East Bank of Demerara. Searches intensified for the missing fisherman and relatives are hoping that his body will be recovered.

Singh said her husband has been a fisherman for over 20 years.

They share three children. Gomes also fathered two children from a previous union.
