Swim team gets $1M from NSC for CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Barbados

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has received $1 million from the National Sports Commission (NSC) intended to support the participation of the association’s contingent at the 35th CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Barbados to be held from April 16 to 20.

Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle presented the cheque to GASA’s Honourary Treasurer, Valmiki Singh, during a simple ceremony.

According to Ninvalle, the NSC remains committed to supporting national athletes. He also advised the federations and associations to submit their respective plans and budgets in order to receive financial support.

Meanwhile, president of GASA, Dwayne Scott who gave remarks at the ceremony, said, “GASA is extremely grateful to NSC, the Director of Sport, and the Minister of Sports and Culture for their contribution and support towards our team’s participation at the 2022 CARIFTA Games.”

Guyana’s team for the event consists of Daniel Claxton, Elliot and Ethan Gonsalves, Marius (Open Water), Mario Ramkhellawan, Nathan Jackson, Vishal Babulall, Shareefa Lewis, Amber DeGoeas (Open Water), and Zane Crane.

On the management side, Shyka Gonsalves, and Sean Baksh (Open Water) will serve as coaches, while Elkie Rodrigues will act in the capacity of team manager.

Guyana came away with a haul of five medals – three gold and two bronze – at the 2019 edition of the tournament. All the accolades were won by eventual Olympian Aleka Persaud.

The local star who was competing in the Girls 11-12 category, claimed gold in the 100m fly as well as the 50m and 100m freestyle events. She also walked away with bronze in the 50m and 200m fly events.
