Bartica businessman fatally struck by biker on First Avenue

Premnauth Persaud, a 54-year-old businessman also known as ‘Greens Man’ died after he was struck down on Saturday night by a motorcyclist at First Avenue, Bartica.

According to a police report, the accident which involved motorcycle CJ 5268 owned by Stacy David of Three Mile, Bartica was at the time of the incident ridden by Eric David, a 19-year-old miner.

Enquiries revealed that about 10 pm, David was riding the motorcycle carrying pillion rider Phebeon Stanford, also 19 years old, of Carabese Hill. The motorcyclist was said to have been headed in the northern direction along the western carriageway of First Avenue and was said to have been going at a fast rate when he apparently lost control and struck down Persaud who was standing on the western parapet of the said road.

As a result of the accident, David, Stanford and Persaud all suffered injuries about their bodies. Persaud who was picked up in an unconscious state by police and taken to the Bartica Hospital was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is currently at the hospital’s morgue awaiting an autopsy.

The rider and pillion rider who were conscious were seen and examined by a doctor and sent away.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the rider but no trace of alcohol was found in his system. He is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation. The motorcycle involved has been lodged.

Kevin Thomas, a friend of Persaud, shared that the deceased who hailed from Morashi, Essequibo River had been living at First Avenue, Bartica for some months now. He further said that Persaud was in front of his home when the accident occurred. Persaud, he said, would purchase vegetables and ground provisions at the Parika Stelling and return to Bartica where he plied his trade.
