(Trinidad Guardian) Two relatives, a 31-year-old woman and her common-law husband, have been charged with manslaughter following the death of six-year-old Zackariah Charles.

The Police Service said in a release that charges were laid against the boy’s mother, Rnella Charles and her common-law husband Stephon Brizan, of Old St Joseph Road, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain.

The charges were laid 10 days after the child’s death and after instructions were given by Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard, SC.

Charles and Brizan are expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate on Friday to answer to the charges.

Police said at about 7 pm last week Tuesday, Zackariah was sent by his parents to take a bath. While there, police added, a loud noise was heard and the parents went to check on Zackariah, when they allegedly found him on the bathroom floor in an unconscious state.

The child was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital but after doctors reportedly attempted to resuscitate him, he was declared dead at about 8.37 pm.

An autopsy conducted at the Forensic Science Centre in St James revealed that he died from blunt force trauma to the head.
