NA Maternity Unit to be completed in two months – Anthony

The new Maternity Unit at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice is expected to be finished within two months, according to Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony.

During his daily COVID-19 update on Tuesday, Anthony said many modifications had to be done in order to ensure the correct design of the building.

The minister said that the new unit will primarily benefit mothers who are awaiting delivery. It will consist of delivery rooms, two theatres, a neo-natal unit for premature babies, a post-natal ward and nurseries, among many other essential rooms.

“…So we had to do a lot of modifications, including modifying the theatre…pillars were in the middle of the operating space and that would obviously hinder the smooth operations in a theatre… so those works have been completed and they’re doing final works now to finish off the theatres,”  he said.

“We have some ICU spaces and things like that in the building, so those things are being worked on right now and additional to that we have to put in medical gas so those lines and so forth for the medical gas are being put in place,” he added, while noting that the ministry was hoping to have the physical works completed in a matter of two months in order to open the facility.
