Several communities across the country have reported floods following persistent heavy rainfall on Saturday and yesterday.

Flooding was reported in regions Two, Five and Nine and though it is not severe regional authorities and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) are encouraging persons to take the necessary precautions.

In Region Two, floods were reported at Suddie and market vendors were forced to ply their trade in the water. The levels were above the ankle following hours of intense rainfall yesterday.

In Region Five several homes within the Mahaicony-Abary Neighbourhood Democratic Council experienced flooding.

The affected communities were visited by Regional Chairman Vickchand Ramphal, Regional Executive Officer Genevieve Blackman and Minister of Public Service Sonia Parag. During the visit, the RDC’s social media page stated that Blackman said that emergency excavation works will commence shortly to bring relief to affected villages.

Lethem, Central Rupununi and parts of South Rupununi have reported high levels of water.

According to reports,  several roads in Lethem and along the South Rupununi trail have been inundated and road users have been advised to proceed with caution.

The CDC’s Public Information Officer Patrice Wishart yesterday told Stabroek News that they have not received any distress reports. He noted that while they have received a few reports of flooding in Region 9, he was waiting to be briefed by officials in the region on the magnitude.

Last year around this time, heavy rain across the country left a trail of disaster and forced the government to hand out relief to cushion the impacts on livelihoods.

Earlier this month, Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha said that he has instructed the engineers under the purview of his ministry to ensure all drainage structures are operable.
