(Trinidad Guardian) A 53-year-old woman was shot dead as she slept in her bedroom in Champs Fleurs yesterday morning, while her 24-year-old daughter escaped becoming a second victim.

The victim has been identified as Rosemary Harricharan, of William Street, Champs Fleurs.

Police said the incident occurred at 1.30 am.

The victim’s daughter told police she was at home in the living room at about 1.10 am when she heard several gunshots coming from outside of the home.

She said she called out to her mother and upon checking, saw her bleeding on her bed.

Harricharan was shot several times in the right side of her chest and lower left abdomen.

The daughter told police that the gunman allegedly followed her inside and fired several shots behind her. She escaped unharmed.

She told police she fled through a door located on the northern side of the house.

Residents yesterday told Guardian Media they were confused about who would have wanted Harricharan dead, as she was an outpatient of the St Ann’s Mental Hospital and did not interfere with anyone in the area.

“Yeah we know her. She was normal and cool. She wasn’t that outgoing but she here long time. She around long in the community,” one resident who did not want to be identified said.

“She used to be home mostly. She didn’t like to go out and lime really. She had she papers (St Ann’s patient), but she was normal for the most part. She never give any trouble. She would fuss once in a while but we all get accustomed to her and we know her to be like that,” he added.

He said he did not know if anyone ever threatened them but said her daughter was by his place earlier liming with them and a group of friends playing a game of cards.

“The daughter and all was liming here last night and then about midnight so, she went home and then after that was shots. It was a set of we liming, so we guessing they must be wait on us to done lime before they make that move but it so weird,” the neighbour added.

A motive is yet to be established for the killing.
