Ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) yesterday discovered $17 million worth of cocaine in a container at the Demerara Shipping Limited at Lombard Street, Georgetown.

The container was due to be shipped out of the country

The agency in a press release issued yesterday afternoon said that the CANU officers conducted an operation during which parcels of the cocaine were found inside a bag in the container.

The 21 parcels of illegal drugs was transported to CANU headquarters, where it was tested and confirmed to be cocaine, CANU said. It was weighed and amounted to 24.63 kilogrammes, which has a street value of approximately $17 million, the agency added.

“The fact that it was discovered on the wharf indicates that it was intended for transshipment to another overseas territory which would have increased its street value,” the release noted.
