Two dead after Mahaicony rice mill electrocution

Two men lost their lives on Friday afternoon after they were electrocuted at a rice mill in Mahaicony.

Dead are Shacquille Butts, 27, a labourer, of Lot 4 Airy Hall, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, and Gousham Narine, 25, also known as Chris, a welder, of Lot 78 Triple X Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara.

The fatal mishap occurred around 16:00 hrs at Trans Rice Mill, located at Branch Road, Mahaicony, where the men had been building a metal shed.

The men were standing on a metal scaffold.

Sunday Stabroek was told that Narine was pulling up a 20-ft long metal sheet when it reportedly connected to a nearby Guyana Power and Light line. As a result, Narine was electrocuted. Upon seeing Narine being shocked, Butts reportedly attempted to hold on to him and he was also electrocuted. They both fell from the scaffold to the ground.

Several other workers were present carrying out various tasks at the location when the fatal accident occurred.

They rushed Butts and Narine to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, where Narine was pronounced dead on arrival. Butts later succumbed while receiving treatment at the health facility.

Sunday Stabroek was told that Narine received burn injuries to his left hand, lower abdomen, feet and blood was seen running from his nostrils, while Butts had noticeable bruises to his face.

As of yesterday afternoon, ranks in Region Five were investigating the matter and had questioned several persons at the worksite.
