Police have arrested a man who they said confessed to murdering two Brazilian goldminers at Gold Camp Backdam, Mount Ayanganna, Potaro River.

The deceased men have been identified as Geraldo Vieira De Souza and Edivaldo Alves Da Silva. Their skeletal remains have been found.

Police were only made aware of the murders following a report by a villager months later. On Friday investigators were able to question the suspect, Lyfrey Alban. Alban reportedly told police that he was paid by a Brazilian national who he referred to as the “Macushee Man” to kill the men.

He claims the man hired him and promised to pay $2M for the death of Da Silva and De Souza. Alban told investigators that the Brazilian man wanted the duo dead since they had killed his son in Brazil.

Police said Lyfrey was armed with a 20-gauge shotgun and shot both men at their camp. He stated that after he committed the act, the “Macushee man” collected the weapon and went away without paying him.

Despite this claim, the police said Lyfrey, when arrested at the same camp, was found with an illegal 20-gauge single-barrel shotgun.

He is expected to be charged this week over the double murder.
